During Key Stage 3 Physical Education lessons, learners will be exposed to a number of experiences that will provide opportunities to become physically confident and to support their knowledge of how to live a healthy, active lifestyle. The programme followed will enable learners to become competent, performers that develop techniques that can be applied in a range of situations. Schemes of work will develop understanding of the key principles of performance as well as practical application. Through taking part in competitive sport, learners will embed the values of fairness and respect, while building character, understanding and the confidence to be involved in sport and exercise into adulthood. An ability to make effective decisions based upon sound analysis of their own and others’ performances will be instilled within learners to ease the transition onto GCSE PE for those choosing to follow that route within the school.
All P.E. lessons in Key Stage 3 will be taught in single sex ability based groups. All activity areas are taught in discrete activity blocks over a concentrated period of time.
All learners will be assessed in relation to their level of knowledge, understanding and application within the subject area. Assessment will take place using an internally monitored and standardised system throughout these two years. Each year group will receive assessment information in line with the school's programme of reporting at the appropriate time in the year.
It is not the policy of the Department to set homework in Physical Education, but all learners are encouraged to participate in some sporting or health related activity post school hours at some stage during the week to develop their skills, techniques and understanding.
All learners in Years 9, 10 and 11 will participate in two hours of Physical Education a fortnight, as part of their Core PE programme. A variety of activities will be offered to all learners through a structured programme that will provide opportunity for the learners to engage in a healthy, active lifestyle.
The majority of learners will be taught in single sex groupings in order to specifically cater for the varying needs of the learners, and groups will follow the timetabled activities decided at the start of the academic year.
Across Year 9, 10 and Year 11, all learners will cover aspects of health-related fitness either through a discreet unit or through the programme of activities that are delivered in line with National Curriculum requirements.
In addition to the Core PE programme an extensive range of extra-curricular activities will be offered throughout the year. These activities will further extend the opportunities and experiences available to all learners in Year 9, 10 and Year 11 and will encourage participation in their own healthy, active lifestyles.
Over the three years of the key stage all students will be assessed in regard to behaviour and effort in line with whole school procedures.
