Course Overview
Product Designis a practical subject that allows students to design and make a variety of products, including a games controller, mobile phone stand, gadget tidy and MP3 docking station. Students will learn how to sketch, undertake research and make a prototype.
Unit 1: Written Paper (45501)
2 Hours – 120 marks – 40%

Unit 2: Design and Making Practice (45502)
Approximately 45 Hours
90 marks – 60%
Consists of a single design and make activity selected from a range of settasks.

Students will be given the opportunity to develop their practical skills by responding creatively to design and make challenge. Products such as MP3 docking stations and radios allow endless styling possibilities as the electronic components are very small in comparison with the outer cases. As a result of detailed product analysis of a small range of similar products identify a specific target market and design and make a working prototype which is suitable for high volume manufacture. Battery access and the fastening of the circuit/components/casing will be key requirements You are also asked to show how the product can be disassembled and what can be done with the product at the end of its life. | |
