The Food Technology and Catering Department is offering the Eduqas (WJEC) Level 1/2 Technical Award in Hospitality and Catering for KS4.
This Award is equivalent to a GCSE and is graded Pass, Merit,and Distinction. The qualification is 60% internal assessment (Coursework) and40% external assessment (written exam)
The Eduqas/WJEC Level 1/2 Award in Hospitality and Catering has been designed to support learners in schools and colleges who want to learn about this vocational sector and the potential it can offer them for their careers or further study.
It is suitable as a foundation for further study, possibly to Level 3 in Food and Nutrition in Further Education, providing learners with a core depth of knowledge and a range of specialist and general skills that will support their progression to further learning and employment.
Employment inhospitality and catering can range from waiting staff, receptionists andcatering assistants to chefs, hotel and bar managers and food technologists infood manufacturing.
The qualification is made up of 2 mandatory units:
Unit 1 – The Hospitality and Catering Industry and
Unit 2 – Hospitality and Catering in Action.
The course will start in Year 9, when learners will learn the knowledge to underpin the completion of the Award in Year 11. Areas covered:
As well as the theoretical knowledge, learners will undertake practical work every week which will develop their Catering skills in areas such as knife skills, kitchen hygiene, use of equipment and team work. These sessions will also reinforce the theory lessons as learners demonstrate their knowledge of meal planning and nutrition, kitchen hygiene and safety as well as developing team work and problem solving.
There will be a 4 hour practical exam towards the end of the course which involves learners planning and making 4 courses for a chosen target group.
